Project
The Atlanta Cafe, Clacton-on-Sea
Client
Tendring District Council
An unbuilt commission for an iconic seafront restaurant to form part of the seafront regeneration strategy in Clacton.
RDA were appointed by Tendring District Council's Regeneration Team to prepare a planning application for a building that would connect the promenade to the undercliff walk and include a range of restaurant, cafe and bar offers to help stimulate movement and activity on the seafront.
The proposed building comprised a series of layers echoing the big horizontals of the seascape and strata of the cliffs, linked by a dynamic continuous line that folds over on itself like a breaking wave. At promenade level the wave also mimics the hull of an upturned boat which frames a section of the horizon in views from within the ornamental gardens.
