The team set out to deliver a design solution that would facilitate a series of placemaking objectives to improve the character and quality of the local streetscape, with a new a building that will celebrate this important corner site on the threshold of the citiy’s historic and new commercial districts.
Sustainability is at the core of the proposals with measures that minimise whole life carbon, and enhance ecology and wellness embedded within the design. While the opportunity for ecological enhancements are more limited on tight urban sites like this, the proposals bring significant urban greening and biodiversity gains within extensive landscaped roof terraces .
The new residential student population will benefit from exceptional amenity and social facilities that are at the forefront of the proposals and which will extend activity outwith office hours in Glasgow's Central Busines District. The proposals achieve these objectives, within a distinctive, historically inspired, contextually led contemporary building that will provide 259 student studios with over 1,200m² of social space, roof gardens and terraces.
